For sale is a genuine French Modèle 1840 (Mle 1840) percussion musket manufactured at the Manufacture Royale de Saint-Étienne (clearly marked "M.Rle de St. Etienne" on the lockplate and "Mle 1840" on the tang).

 

This is a classic Civil War-era import — thousands of these French muskets were purchased by both Union and Confederate forces to supplement domestic production.

 

Key Features & Markings:

Back-action percussion lock with strong "M.Rle de St. Etienne" stamp Barrel tang clearly marked Mle 1840 Multiple French inspector/proof marks including "VA", "MA"/"VM", "K C de 18" (or similar contrôle marks), and assembly number "2"

Approx. 42–43" barrel, overall length ~57–58"

Complete with correct period socket bayonet that fits the lug Steel ramrod present Honest service patina with light pitting and wood dings consistent with 180+ years of age — no modern refinishing or heavy restoration This musket shows typical field use wear but remains mechanically sound with tight wood-to-metal fit. It's a fantastic representative piece for any Civil War collection, reenacting, or black-powder shooting (black powder only, of course — have a gunsmith check it first if firing).

 

These Saint-Étienne Mle 1840s are increasingly sought after as authentic European imports from the War Between the States. Condition: Good+ original collector grade — strong markings, functional lock and mechanics, nice untouched appearance.
